Cal Academy of Sciences Hosts Exhibit on Arctic Refuge

The stunning photographs of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge taken by Subhankar Banerjee will be on display at the California Academy of Sciences starting September 13. Complementing Banerjee's exhibition will be a short video display about the Oil on Ice documentary.

Banerjee's photos were used on the floor of the Senate by Senator Barbara Boxer to block a crucial vote to drill in the Refuge by proving that there is a there there.

"This whole effort to protect the Refuge has hinged on being able to show people in no uncertain terms that drilling the Refuge is likely to be irreparably harmful," said Dale Djerassi, producer for Oil on Ice. "Subhankar Banerjee's work galvanized the political effort to protect the fragile beauty of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. With our film, we're working to add more energy to that effort."

The exhibit, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land, presents forty-nine breath-taking photos of endangered wildlife, expansive terrain, and remote Gwich'in and Inuit communities.

The exhibit opens on September 13 and runs until December 31, 2003.
The California Academy of Sciences is located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco (55 Concourse Drive).

About Oil on Ice
OIL ON ICE (www.oilonice.org) is a multi-faceted media project about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska and the conflict over drilling for oil there. The one-hour documentary film, WebDVD and Website examine the battle over one of America’s last great wild places, which is currently at the center of a national energy debate. OIL ON ICE shows how the fate of the refuge is inextricably linked to decisions our nation makes about energy policy, transportation choices, and other seemingly unrelated matters. And as the film concludes, the culture and livelihood of the native Gwich’in Indians and the survival of migratory wildlife are caught in the balance.
